What are Christian values all about!
It is the advent time of which Christmas is a part to be celebrated on December 25. It is also the time to revisit the Christian values.

Every religion subscribes for certain basic values which are spiritual in nature and so does Christianity. Though the Christian values such as hope, righteousness, love, humility and godliness are spiritual in nature, however, these values come alive through thoughts, deeds and actions.

It is held that the main Christian value is 'having God first in our lives' or 'seeking God's righteousness and totally relying on Him'. In other words, humans must seek first and foremost 'the kingdom of God'.

Furthermore, values are regarded as those tenets and non-negotiable pathways to lead a purposeful human life. All religions preach to live a life with some certain human values. The term Christian values, historically found in the teachings of Christ, are also called biblical teachings.

In a way, values can be seen as ideals and intrinsic life norms that work as motivators and justifications for our thoughts and actions.

Here are some excerpts on Christian values from the internet:

The biblical teachings of Christ include:

•             Fidelity in marriage: "Whom God has joined together let no man put asunder."

•             Forgiveness of sins: "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."

•             Renunciation of violence: "If a man strikes you on one cheek, turn the other cheek."

•             Renunciation of worldly goods: "Gather not your riches up upon this earth, for there your heart will be also."

•             Unconditional love: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you"

•             Worship of God: "You shall love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind."

In the twenty first Century, the phrases "Christian values" are being used by conservative religious and some political groups to describe the following agenda in many Chistian-dominated countries:

•             Censorship of sexual content, especially in movies and programmes on television

•             Sexual abstinence outside of marriage

•             The desirability of laws against induced abortion

•             The desirability of laws against same-sex marriage and support for laws against the acceptance of homosexuality into mainstream society

•             The desirability of re-instituting religious prayers in schools.

It should be noted that the Church considers the call to chastity to be universal to all persons according to their state in life and follow an ethical living.

Most convent and Christian missionary schools encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith directly or indirectly and promote Christian values through the experiences they offer to the learners.
