Reject hate speech and discrimination that undermine social cohesion: UN Chief Guterres
"I call on all political, religious and civil society leaders to reject hate speech and discrimination, and to work vigorously to address and mitigate the root causes at undermine social cohesion and create conditions for hatred and intolerance," stated the released message of UN Chief Antonio Guterres, on the occasion of Commemorations of 25th Anniversary of International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda (April 7).

Three Commemorative meeting events by the UN Agencies have notified are the Memorial Ceremony at Palais des Nations in Geneva (Monday, 8 April); Paris Memorial Event at UNESCO in Paris (April 9); and Memorial Ceremony at General Assembly Hall of United Nations Headquarters in New York (April 12). Also, commemorative and educational activities are being organized by UN information centres around the world to mark the observance.

"7 April 1994 marks the beginning of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda perpetrated by the Hutu extremist-led government. Within the following 100 days, more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority were systematically murdered. Moderate Hutu and others who opposed the killings were also killed during that period...

UNESCO will mark the 25th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi with the inauguration of two exhibitions, "Upright Men" by Bruce Clarke and 'The Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda' by the Shoah Memorial, in the UNESCO Foyer, followed by a ceremony in Room I," stated the release.

The event in New York is going to be organized by the United Nations Department of Global Communications and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Rwanda to the United Nations will be marked by Candle Lighting; Minute of Silence; and Musical Performance besides the address.
