Noted child development expert, social activist and former Director of New Delhi's Lady Irwin College, Dr S Anandalakshmy, 86, passed away on March 13, 2019, reported Mylapore Times which was deemed as a big loss for psychology, education and social activism communities of India.

She had earned her PhD (Educational Psychology), University of Wisconsin, USA and contributed selflessly and profusely towards her area of knowledge and work. Because her contribution in area of education, child development and women empowerment she was honoured with the prestigious Mahila Shiromani Award in1989.

She was associated with various child education and development programmes of Rajasthan like, Lok Jumbish, Sandhan, ICDS, Rajathan Adult Education Society and other alternative education programmes of the state. During my brief interaction during her visit to Lok Jumbish Project had educated me with her insights in gender and social equity in education.

Rajasthan Praudh Siksha Samiti, Jaipur is going to organize a memorial meeting and lecture 'Jindgi Ka Jashan' on April 9 to pay homage to late Dr. S. Anandalakshmy for here exemplary contribution to fields of child development and education.

In an article titled 'Early childhood education: flashback and future" for Merinews, she had written, "The child's development takes place in an open system with a high rate of interchange within the system. The child is highly environment-responsive. Serious lacks at critical periods of maximum susceptibility may result in irreversible deficits. Deprivation is the downward spiral the child slides on without volition."

She had advocated for preschool education as a true welfare measure by the state with priority in services be given to vulnerable groups through integrated services combining education, health, and welfare.

Regarding the implementation of the ICDS, her posers invariably were: What must we do to hold the Government to its promises? What can we do as civil society to change the opportunity structure of deprived children, in order to ensure that early childhood education is a right?
